Lunch & Learn: Co-housing, A Model for Community

August 24, 2018 @ 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Grab your lunch and head over to Sprocket. Architect, George Abert will share information about the fascinating, Danish model. Cohousing is an intentional community of private homes clustered around shared space. Each attached or single family home has traditional amenities, including a private kitchen. Shared spaces typically feature a common house, which may include a large kitchen and dining area, laundry, and recreational space. Shared outdoor space may include parking, walkways, open space, and gardens. Neighbors may share resources like tools and lawnmowers. Households have independent incomes and private lives, but neighbors collaboratively plan and manage community activities and shared spaces. Legal structures are typically HOAs, Condo Associations, or Housing Cooperatives. Community activities feature regularly‐scheduled meals, meetings, and workdays. Neighbors gather for parties, games, movies, or other events. Cohousing makes easy to form clubs, organize child and elder care, and carpool. In the final analysis, Cohousing Development is a delicate Balancing Act of Development, Marketing & Community. And, most importantly, Cohousing my very well be the most effective way for a significant percentage of the crashing tsunami of baby boomer retirees to salvage a decent measure of dignity and

meaning in elderhood.
